MUHAMED KAFEDŽIĆ MUHA, 100 VIEWS OF UKIYO-E: Beograd
Muhamed Kafedžić Muha je takođe oslikao mural The Great Super Mario Wave of Čukarica, na spoljnom zidu osnovne škole Đorđe Krstić na opštini Čukarica.

MUHAMED KAFEDŽIĆ MUHA, 100 VIEWS OF UKIYO-E: Belgrade
With the initiative of a Belgrade curator and art historian Srđan Tunić, a Sarajevo artist Muhamed Kafedžić Muha was a guest at the ‘Studentski Grad’ Cultural Centre (SGCC) Art Program from the 16th to the 20th of September, 2013. With a substantial support of SGCC, and particularly its art director Maida Gruden, a public program, incorporating three segments, was organized within the framework of the visit.
A presentation of Kafedžić’s art work was held in the form of a dialogue with the artist. Kafedžić defended his master thesis at the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo, with a theme One of the 100 views and a series of works entitled 100 Views of Ukiyo-e, Volume I: Masters in 2012. The series summarized his interest in ukiyo-e – a traditional Japanese woodblock print technique, the Japanese art and culture, and its influence on the impressionists and postimpressionists with the overview on contemporary painting. By using the technique of appropriation Kafedžić questions the relations between the original and the copy through linking two types of ‘Pop’ art, one of the 17th – the 19th century ukiyo-e, and the 20th -century American pop art, temporally and culturally different, but nevertheless equivalent at the same time. In his artwork, which incorporates graphic design, anime, painting and comics, he is developing an authentic style and artistic manner. In recognition of his work, Kafedžić received the Collegium Artisticum 2013 award in the category of Painting in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The presentation was followed by a public discussion on Japanese animated films – anime, entitled How to be Anime Otaku at the Balkans, where the guests, apart from Kafedžić, included Bojan Vukadinović (graduated culturologist, the president and the founder of Sakurabana Society), Isidora Vlasak (graduated philologist, the Vice President of Sakurabana Society), Jelena Jokanović (translator, the Vice President of Sakurabana Society) and Srđan Đukić (a Physics and Astronomy Lecturer from Belgrade, an associate of Tagai, Serbian-Japanese Friendship Society from Belgrade, and the National Observatory at Kalemegdan). The aim of the discussion was to draw the attention of the public to origination and development of this sub-cultural phenomenon in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans in general, and to provide an opportunity for exchange of experiences from both countries.
Kafedžić also created the mural The Great Super Mario Wave of Čukarica, painted on the front-end wall of the primary school Đorđe Krstić in the municipality of Čukarica. It is an interpretation, monumental in its size, of The Great Wave off Kanagawa by the Japanese artist Hokusai, painted on the wall located near the entrance to the school´s swimming pool. By adjusting to the surface of Carrara marble mosaic tiles, Kafedžić achieved a pictorial effect similar to pixelation, creating a visual impression of retro video games and paying homage to the original character Super Mario from the eponymous legendary game. Kafedžić painted the first mural from the series 100 Great Waves on the wall of primary school Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, in Pančevo, in 2012, and this was an opportunity to do one in Belgrade, one year later.
The aim of this program is to present Muhameda Kafedžić’s public art work in Belgrade and, with the aid of curator Srđan Tunić and SGCC, to prepare a continuation of the collaboration in 2014, which includes staging of the exhibition 100 Views of Ukiyo-e in the Great Gallery of SGCC and a possible collaboration with the Sakurabana Society, as an accompanying program of the events of the 2014 Japanizam Festival. This initiative represents a contribution to exchange and collaboration between both young and established art and culture professionals from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, fostering their mobility in the region, a stronger presence of contemporary trends in visual arts, but also the networking based on common interests and enthusiasm for the traditional and contemporary Japanese art and culture.
